Basic Knowledge of Your Home Air Conditioning Unit

A home air conditioning unit has all sorts of different parts which are important to take good care of if you want your air conditioner to cool your house properly. If you catch problems early it will be less expensive to cool the house and you won't have to spend as much time without air conditioning.

The thermostat is necessary in order to not only maintain the temperature that you want, but also to turn your system on and off. You can minimize your energy costs if you keep the thermostat at a set temperature. Normally 68 degrees is recommended for heating and 78 degrees for cooling.

Air quality and air flow are controlled by the air handler. Usually this component of the home air conditioning unit is located in the attic, a closet, or the garage. For optimal air quality you need to keep the blower wheel and evaporator coil in the air handler clean and maintained. This includes regularly replacing the air filter so excessive dirt doesn't restrict the air flow to the evaporator, which could make the whole system break down. Depending on the filter, it should be changed every one to three months.

The drain line of the condensing unit should also be cleaned regularly. The condensing unit is usually outside the house. If this line is not properly cleaned it could case a back up of water that could get into the air handler. The water could also cause other damage. It is also important to clean the compressor that is inside the condensing unit two times a year. This is one of the most important parts of your system so you want to make sure it is clean so your system runs efficiently.

These are the components of your air conditioning unit that are the most important. All of them need to be properly maintained. You should keep an eye on them to make sure there are no problems. Now that you know about these parts and the required servicing that they need it should be easier to keep your system working at optimal levels so that you have fewer problems with your air conditioning.
