When summer brings on the heat, it's nice to have a working AC system to keep you cool and comfortable. Whether you have experienced problems with your current system, or are moving to a new place and need to consider more options for heating and cooling, one thing is certain: if it's hot outside, you must decide quickly. To live in a home without the proper circulation can prove hazardous to your health. You need to decide if using a central air system or several window units for your house is the best way to go.
The prime advantage to a system that cools your entire house is that you can maintain an even temperature throughout all the rooms. On an especially hot day, it's nice to know you don't have to set fans everywhere to achieve the level of comfort you desire. Conversely, individual units offer the benefit of making certain rooms cooler than others. At night, if your area tends to get very humid, you may wish for a lower temperature in the bedroom than elsewhere. A window unit there will definitely help.
Consider, too, the size of your home, how many people live with you, how often you have company over, and how much you pay in energy bills on average. If you find you don't have much need for cold air regardless of where you live, a window unit may suffice.
If you live an an attached home or condo, it's a good idea to check covenants that may otherwise restrict use of window units, assuming central AC and heat is not part of your fee package.
