Grooming Your St. Bernard

St. Bernards are enormous and lovable dogs. As members of the working group of dogs, they were originally bred to help with mountain rescues in Switzerland. They are loyal, good-tempered dogs that are wonderful with children and make great pets if you have the space.

However, don't buy a St. Bernard unless you are prepared to spend some time and/or money on grooming. Since these dogs originated in snowy and cold Switzerland, St. Bernards have a thick dense coat.

There are both longhaired and shorthaired varieties of the breeds. The grooming is a little easier for the shorthaired type. A bristle brush is a good all-purpose brush for the breed but the St. Bernard coat can also benefit from some specialized brushes.

A slicker brush can be used to remove matting and dead hair, especially during the shedding season. Your dog will shed its under coat twice a year. To stimulate your St. Bernards circulation and remove a maximum amount of loose hair, try brushing the coat opposite to the way it lays naturally.

Brushing your St. Bernard every day is key to managing shedding and keeping your dog clean. The process, once mastered, should only take about 5 minutes a day.

Bathing your St. Bernard can be a daunting task. Unlike other smaller breeds, St. Bernards must be bathed outdoors or in a full sized bathtub. Use a hot water hose and gently soak your dog's coat. Once the coat is thoroughly wet, shampoo your dog with a mild pet shampoo.

You want to avoid using anything too harsh, no matter how dirty your dog gets. A gentle shampoo will not strip the natural oils from your dog's hair. It is recommended that you wash and rinse your St. Bernard with the shampoo at least twice.

Rinse thoroughly to avoid any residue left in the dog's undercoat. You can dry your dog to a damp dry state with towels and, depending on the season, let the dog air dry or blow dry the coat.

Many St. Bernard owners use special varieties of shampoo to help brighten the white part of the dog's coat. The white parts of the coat can be stained by dirt of other debris. These products can be added to the normal shampoo, or used in replacement of a regular dog shampoo. Certain varieties of whitening shampoo need to be left in the coat for five to ten minutes before rinsing it out.

If you'd like to soften your St. Bernard's coat you can use a small amount of human conditioner. As a final step, you can use a flea rinse. Generally, flea rinses protect your dog for 10 to 14 days after use.

Be very careful when administering the flea rinse. Read all instructions carefully and dilute the product properly. Avoid your dog's eyes when applying the rinse.

St. Bernards are prone to eye weeping which can cause staining on the face. There are special products available such as "Diamond Eyes" that can gently remove these stains. In between treatments, you can wipe away any reside gently with a washcloth.

Window Exhaust Fan Is A Great Alternative Of Conventional Cooling Methods

The principal job of a window exhaust fan is to drive the musty air out and generate a fresh air incoming process and the same time save huge cost of air conditioning system. Generally it is used in kitchen & bed room even to replace an air conditioning system as far as the cost saving is concerned. It carries clean air into the room and throws the musty air out. It generates a breeze throughout the room which keeps the atmosphere comfortable inside the room. Some exhaust fans can generate a more powerful centrifugal action to bring cool breeze through the entire home or workplace, at a cheapest expenditure of central air conditioning system. These applications are one of the best alternatives to conventional air conditioning system and consume little energy in comparison to other cooling systems.

You can find out two different types of design. One type of exhaust fan is with a hood and disposable filter, carbon filter assembled. This one sucks and filters the fumes and smokes and then circulates or sends it out. Another one just sucks the fumes and air from the entire room and throws it out. In this case, all other opened windows will help to enter the fresh air inside the room. Even if the outlets are closed, there will be ample space for air to pass.

It is recommended that you look for a window exhaust fan which is having a couple of whisper-quiet speeds to have a soundless and uninterrupted sleep. It should also have lights to see the controls in the dark. Find out one with auto shut down timer option with a remote control and adjustable grills which can help you control the flow of air at the desired direction.

There are many common features available in window exhaust fan like dimmer, variable speed controls, dual-axis rotation. These are available with brands like Air King, Dayton, Broan and Panasonic.

Keep Cool This Summer With Portable Air Conditioning

With a bit of luck we'll get to enjoy several weeks of enjoying beautiful hot weather once the warm, sunny weather comes around . Or rather, 'enjoy' it if outside and not working, but for those stuck indoors when temperatures are soaring it can be hot, humid and extremely uncomfortable.

Air conditioning provides the ideal solution to that problem and the premises of many larger companies and businesses are already equipped with an efficient integral air conditioning plant. However, smaller or temporary premises can also benefit from the cooling effects of air conditioning by hiring or purchasing portable air conditioning units.

These provide fantastic cooling solutions for a range of permanent and temporary buildings and can even be used effectively in marquees and other temporary structures. Indeed, if you are thinking of putting on an event during the summer, portable air conditioning units could mean the difference between your guests being hot and bothered, or chilled and comfortable. Easily and conveniently deployed, they can be used in isolation or in series. Most are fitted with wheels, making them easy to manoeuvre with little effort. Rather than go to the expense of installing permanent units, portable air conditioning allows for a cheaper solution, but with the added option of being able to take it elsewhere, if required.

Most modern-day portable air conditioning units are maintenance free and provide great solutions for space limited industrial premises. Available in a variety of colours, although usually white or black, they blend into any home or office environment, providing a practical solution to the problem of overheated occupants; for a little extra, many even come with a convenient remote control unit.

More people are now opting to work from home and during the height of summer it can get oppressively hot and humid indoors, even in the UK! Again, portable air conditioning provides the perfect solution for that environment; there's no need to go through the expense or inconvenience or installing a complete system that would require regular maintenance. Portable units benefit from being easy to move around the office or working space to get the desired result, and require little care.

Portable air conditioning units also come in handy for many other people. For example, many frequent summer static mobile home users think they're a godsend. Easily transported from bricks-and-mortar home to mobile home, all that is required is to position the unit and plug into the static mobile home's power sockets and you're good to go!

Troubleshooting Air Conditioning Compressor Problems

Air conditioners are mechanical devices that are used to cool a room, entire house, or office building. The process of cooling involves utilizing chemicals that are converted from a gas to a liquid and then back to a gas again. One of the main parts of an air conditioner that is essential for cooling is the compressor. The compressor will squeeze the fluid and press the molecules tightly together in order to increase the temperature and energy. When the fluid travels out of the compressor and into the condenser, it has changed and is in the form of a high pressure gas. Because the compressor is an essential component of the air conditioner, it is important to make sure it functions properly.

Below are a number of tips to troubleshooting air conditioning compressor problems:

1. The first thing you should do is turn the air conditioner off and check for any wires and connections that look damaged. This can include wires that look worn, loose, or burned. You should also check the wire connections in the compressor terminal box for any signs of damage that will require professional repair.

2. If you find that the air conditioner is not providing enough of a cooling effect, you should check the temperature. The temperature should be set lower than the room temperature. You should take the temperature about 15 minutes after the air conditioner has been running. If the condenser fan and the compressor are both running and the cooling is weak, check the temperature drop. You do this by subtracting the air temperature entering the unit from the temperature of the air leaving the unit. If the temperature drop is extremely low, the unit's refrigerant may need to be charged.

3. If the condenser fan starts and works properly, but the compressor is not starting, the air conditioner may either be low on refrigerant, the compressor may be broken, or the compressor may be too hot.

4. It is important to check the fan motor which can affect the compressor. For instance, a fan motor may have poor windings or locks when it is running. There may also be bad components such as a worn thrust bearing, the motor may need to be replaced, and the rotor bars may be damaged. All of these problems can affect the compressor and affect the proper functioning of the air conditioner. If you find the compressor starts but the fan is not starting, the condenser fan motor may be causing the problem.

5. There are a number of reasons why a compressor may not start. They can include: problem with the capacitator, a blown fuse, motor overload protector is broken, compressor is locked up, burnt wiring, compressor trips the breaker and blows a fuse, internal damage within the compressor, compressor has non functioning valves, compressor has fallen off its mounts, unequal pressure flowing through valves, and the motor is grounded.

Without a properly running compressor, an air conditioner will not be able to function properly. It is important to be aware that the components of an air conditioner are very delicate and complex; therefore, if you are unsure why your air conditioner is not working, it is best to let a professional determine the cause and make the correct and accurate repair.

Mini Split AC Units - Three Types of Split Units For Your Home

Mini split AC units are becoming very popular as a type of ductless air conditioning that allows a significant reduction of the home cooling costs thanks to an individual room inside unit thermostats, and efficient, ductless heat transfer. In this article you will review three types of split ductless AC units: Wall mounted mini splits, Ceiling recessed mini splits, and Ceiling suspended mini splits. Reviews will compare and contrast these three types of split units.

Mini split AC units are based on the idea of separating the refrigerant compressor or condenser part of the air conditioning unit into the outside unit, and keeping only the expander, or the evaporator, cooling part of the air conditioning unit inside the room. Then, using a relatively thin, a few inches in diameter, conduit with insulated hoses for the incoming and outgoing refrigerant liquid, the heat is efficiently transported from the inside of the house and deposited outside. Such a configuration significantly reduces the noise inside the house. The split units, when positioned right, also provide a quick and completely controlled way to cool down targeted spaces in a home. And finally, they can be a savior when someone is searching for a "no window air conditioner" for a single room.

Let's look at the three types of mini split AC units. You should have a better idea which one might be best suited for your home when you are done reading. We will not discuss the split AC units condenser part here, but instead focus on the split AC units evaporator unit, or the inside unit.

Wall mounted mini splits

These are the most common type. The installer will first drill a small 2-3 inch hole into the interior wall and provide the conduit and the hoses. He will then connect the inside unit to the conduit and the hoses and mount the inside unit over the hole. Usually, the wall mounted split unit will be mounted either above the window or relatively high up on the wall to provide sufficient air supply. The advantage of wall mounted split unit is the ease of installation. The disadvantage is limited air flow.

Ceiling recessed mini splits

Ceiling recessed mini splits will mount inside the ceiling, so none of the unit will protrude out of the ceiling. However, a significant amount of depth will need to be provided for the recessed part, as much as 7 - 10 inches or more. The ceiling recessed split units that are available on the market place will normally take up the air centrally and blow it in four different directions through the directed vents. The advantage of ceiling recessed split unit is that a larger unit can be accommodated into the ceiling given enough space there. The disadvantage is a peculiarly fashioned air flow, taking in air centrally.

Ceiling suspended mini splits

These are suspended several inches from the ceiling on two or more metal rods. The air flow will be uni-directional, from the front to the back of the unit. Due to the adjustable suspension, the unit can be significantly removed from the ceiling which plays a role when the ceilings are high. An additional advantage of ceiling suspended split AC unit is that they are extremely "aerodynamic", meaning that the cold and hot air flow around the unit will be completely unobstructed. In contrast, the ceiling recessed split unit air flow is obstructed by the ceiling and the wall mounted split unit has the air flow obstructed by the wall. This is significant as a better air flow around the unit means that the cooled air can reach a longer distance, thereby more effectively cooling larger spaces.

Listen to Your Home Air Conditioning Unit

A home air conditioning unit is necessary wherever you live and throughout the year. You need to take care of your air conditioner system and to listen to any noises that are coming from your air handler or the condensing unit which is located outside. Just by listening to your system you can tell if there is a problem.

Listen to your air handler which is located in a closet, attic, or in the garage. When you turn on the thermostat you should hear the air coming from your supply vents and feel the cooler air coming from them. In the case that you do not hear the air coming from your supply vents, go to your air handler and put your hand on the outside of the access panel to see if you can feel the vibration from the blower wheel and listen to the sound that it is making. You should feel a steady vibration and a consent noise, if you feel a bad vibration and load humming noise or notice a burnt smell or abnormal noise at all you probably have a bad blower motor. You then need to call a service technician for replacement or repair of the air handler electrical components.

Your home air conditioning unit also has an additional part which is called the condenser which is located outside on the back or side of your home. Take a walk outside to this unit and listen to the fan blade going around and you will notice a steady blowing sound. The condensing unit should not have a strong vibration to this either. If the condensing unit is vibrating you may have a fan blade that is out of balance. If this is the case, the fan motor could burn out or could cause a leak to start if not repaired. So if you notice your condensing unit has a bad vibration it would be best to call a service technician to come out and diagnose the problem for you now instead of waiting until you have no cool air in your home.

The main purpose of this article is to be aware of the importance of listening to your home air conditioning unit so that you might be able to detect a problem before you have a cooling issue and to try prevent the cost of additional repairs before they happen.

How Does Central Air Conditioning Work?

I'm sure you are aware that air conditioning comes in many forms, and what we are looking at here is just another method, but just how does central air conditioning work?

All air conditioning systems tend to work on similar principals and central air conditioners are purpose built to cool the entire home and makes use of ducts to disperse and recycle cooled air throughout rooms on a continual basis. Some models may also move chilled water via pipes and heat exchangers.

Most frequently you will find a split system where the condenser and compressor are located outdoors and connected by refrigerant lines to a coil (or evaporator) in the in the air handler unit. Such a unit basically resembles a metal box that may comprise of a blower, filters, heating/cooling elements, mixing chamber, humidifier, controls and vibration isolators. In contrast, with a 'packaged' system, everything is normally located in a single outdoor unit.

Heat from the home is transferred to the outside using a compressor cycle that works similarly to a refrigerator. A refrigerant fluid is passed through an expansion device which changes from liquid to gas when it absorbs heat and is then released outdoors at high pressure as vapour before changing back from gas to liquid. The fluid will then return to the expansion device and the process repeated.

The air in the home is cooled as it travels over the evaporator; the moisture removed from the air and disposed of by the unit via the household drainage system.

Central air conditioning has a few benefits over other systems as the air is drawn through a filter from parts of the building. This filter extracts any dust and lint particles cleaning the air as well as cooling it. Additionally, specialist filters can also remove microscopic pollutants which can affect health. A further benefit is that noise is reduced as the unit is external to the building.

Central air conditioning is an efficient system but you do need to try and get the highest SEER rating you can afford (the range is 10 to 17). (SEER refers to the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio.) If the unit carries the Energy Star label, it will have a SEER of at least 13 for a split system and 12 for a single unit. A unit with a lower SEER will be uneconomical so if you are considering buying anything second-hand, do watch out for this as the newer units are mostly over 12.

Can I Buy My Own Heating & Air Conditioning Equipment?

I was recently cruising through some online do it yourself forums, and ran across this ongoing question. When a homeowner and/or do-it-yourselfer brings up the subject of equipment containing refrigerant, there are always those, usually of the contractor persuasion, who respond with misinformation. Below is a recant of one such thread.

Question: I am wanting to buy and DIY install a furnace and ac unit for my shop. Where can I buy the equipment?

Misinformed Answer: From the time the CFC air quality codes have been passed it is against the to sell a product with refrigerant in it to a party not cfc certified. You will have a hard time finding anyone to sell you a furnace and a/c

Correct Answer: The unaware and undereducated spread so much misdirection and misinformation.

It is true that: 1. There are no CFC air quality codes. There are laws that prohibit certain actions pertaining to refrigerants - which includes CFCs, HCFCs, HFCs, and several other chemical compositions.

2. It is not lawful to sell refrigerant to uncertified persons, but it is well within the law to sell a product that contains a refrigerant, as long as the uncertified does not handle the refrigerant or break the seal. This must me done by a certified technician. ; for example automobiles with air conditioning, dehumidifiers, and numerous other products.

3. It is lawful for anyone to buy or to sell air conditioning equipment to anyone even if the equipment contains a refrigerant. Let's break it down a bit further. Every time a contractor installs an air conditioner for a homeowner and the homeowner in turn pays the contractor, the contractor has in fact, sold the air conditioner containing a regulated refrigerant to a non-licensed and or noncertified entity.

4. Persons authorized to buy refrigerants (raw material):

b. Only EPA CERTIFIED persons can buy refrigerants.

5. Wholesalers who deal with HVAC contractors usually refuse to sell to non-contractors, or will charge a price that discourages the DIY.

If you are determined to proceed with a Do-It-Yourself project, check out Home Air Direct and others that will sell you the equipment. Do all of the work that you can do within your ability and technical skills, but by all means, when equipment containing EPA regulated refrigerant is involved, hire a local certified technician to assist with the attachment and start up procedure.

There are thousands of dollars to be saved with DIY. These savings will be realized in buying your own equipment, and doing much of the labor related physical work yourself.

Fixing Ice Buildup on AC Units

Ice buildup is an especially nasty problem that can lead to total HVAC system failure. Refrigerants are built to evaporate and condense millions of times over their life cycle, but solidification ruins the system. Especially in the cold of Denver air conditioning companies need to be careful about ice buildup. Especially around unfinished replacement windows, temperature changes can wreak havoc on A/C units. Water vapor is a contaminant in a refrigerant system. All vapor must be eliminated before refrigerant can be added to your central air conditioner. To remove water vapor, Denver HVAC technicians reduce the system pressure to vent vapor and contaminants.

When a HVAC contractor sees a system with excessive water vapor, they may use an alternate method to evacuate the excess water. The multiple evacuation method is only employed by professional Denver HVACR contractors. This method is more effective because three evacuations are run simultaneously with nitrogen to dissipate water vapor.

A step by step guide to the triple evacuation system for air conditioning repair follows:

-Attach hoses from manifold gage to low and high sides of the HVAC system.

-Connect two hoses to the manifold center port by installing a T-joint.

-Attach a vacuum hose to the center T-port and the vacuum pump. Make sure to add an isolation valve if it is not built into the pump.

-Use the other side of the T junction to attach a hose to a nitrogen tank.

-Use a vacuum gauge attached far away from the pump to monitor your progress.

-Open all manifold valves and the vacuum pump. Keep the pressure of the system normal until you open the nitrogen tank.

-Turn on the vacuum an run it until the pressure is below 1000 microns.

-Close the vacuum pump valve and turn off the pump.

-Introduce nitrogen by opening the valve until the pressure manifold shows 5 inches of mercury.

-Then shut the nitrogen tank and wait for the nitrogen to mix with the water vapor.

-Start the pump again and vacuum out everything until it is at the previous vacuum pressure.

-Repeat until there is no more water vapor.

Understanding HVAC Coils - 10 Easy to Understand Facts

With all the types and sizes available, replacing a HVAC coil can be intimidating. Keep in mind that 95% of the overall HVAC coil cost is the finned surface area, number of rows and fins per inch. Casing dimensions, coil depth, connection sizes and header sizes only account for 5% of the overall cost.

10 Simple HVAC coil facts:

  1. If you eliminated the fins and only used the tubes, you would only get about 30% of the performance compared to the same HVAC coils with fins. The fins impact heat transfer much more than the tubes.

  2. Because steam is erosive, steam coils are often constructed differently then hot water coils. Water and steam coils cannot always be used interchangeably. Some duct booster coils can be used with hot water or steam. Be aware that the steam should NOT be modulated through this type of coil if it will be exposed to below freezing air temperatures. As the valve modulates down, there is not enough pressure to push the condensate through this type of coil. If you are using steam in a hot water booster coil, you should choose 2 position control (on/off). Modulating type steam coils, aka "non-freeze" steam coils should not be used with hot water.

  3. The industry has arbitrarily named 1 and 2 row coils "hot water HVAC coils" and 3 - 10 row coils "chilled water HVAC coils". Hot water coils and chilled water coils are constructed the same. Hot water temperatures are much higher than the air temperature, resulting in a coil with fewer rows. Chilled water temperatures are very close to the air temperature, resulting in a much deeper coil.

  4. Chilled water and DX (direct expansion) HVAC coils are identical except for the supply and return arrangement. You can't feed refrigerant through a M.P.T. (male pipe thread) connection and header arrangement. You have to replace the standard hydronic feed with a refrigerant distributer. The "spaghetti tubing" connected to the distributer feeds as many tubes as you want it to feed. Beyond that, chilled water and DX HVAC coils are identical.

  5. Fins have corrugations that run the entire height and depth of each fin. Fins are not flat. Corrugations promote turbulence, increasing the surface area and coil efficiency. Corrugations also help in preventing moisture carryover which is very common with chilled water HVAC coils running at face velocities higher the 550 FPM.

  6. When you look at HVAC coils, you can see that the fins are rippled. This is another way to mix up the air, causing more turbulence which creates more heat transfer, increasing coil efficiency.

  7. Most HVAC coils last 15-20 years. HVAC coils can last as long as 30 years if they are properly maintained. Proper maintenance includes regular cleaning on the airside, and proper treatment of the fluid passing through the tubes.

  8. 5/8" tube chilled water coils use more tubes per row than ½" tube chilled water coils. The ½ tube coils have more finned surface area, but the thicker 5/8" tubes take up more surface area. The performance of the two different HVAC coils is similar. People often choose the 5/8" tube coil due to its slightly lower water pressure drop and thicker tube wall thickness.

  9. Since you pay for copper by the pound, you will pay more for a 5/8" tube coil than a 1/2" tube coil. This is because the wall thickness on a 5/8" tube coil is 10 - 15% more than a comparable 1/2" tube coil. Even though the performance is the same, you will pay more for a 5/8" tube coil. One could claim that a 5/8" tube coil will outlast a 1/2" tube coil.

  10. 95% of the overall cost of HVAC coils is the finned surface area, number of rows and fins per inch. Casing dimensions, coil depth, connection sizes and header sizes only account for 5% of the overall cost. Changing the materials can have a huge impact on the overall cost. Stainless steel casings and copper fins are very common in corrosive environments. The material costs are higher, and the heat transfer properties of different materials will affect the size of the coil. If you change the fins to copper, you will lose about 15% of the capacity, which means you will need a bigger coil.

HVAC Coil templates specific to your application can be downloaded and printed. Bring these templates to your jobsite, mark them up, and fax them to your manufacturer. They will use your template to build an exact duplicate.

What is Your Opinion of a Goodman Heat Pump?

There are many different heat pumps on the market these days. A Goodman heat pump is a product of the second largest manufacturer of heating and cooling products for residential use in North America.

A former air conditioning contractor named Harold Goodman founded the company. They aim to produce high quality and reliable products at a lower cost. They also indicate that installation is trouble free.

However, if you consult consumer reviews, you will find that many people who have purchased these units are not particularly happy with them. You will however, you will also find people that are very happy with their Goodman heat pump.

Besides a Goodman heat pump, the company also manufactures air conditioning units, gas fireplaces, air quality products and coils as well. If you do decide to purchase one of these heat pumps, you are likely going to want to know what is included in the purchase.

A total package purchased with a Goodman heat pump will usually include a compressor, an air coil, a fan and a heat exchanger. The air coil is quite large and it is used for condensation.

You can find a Goodman heat pump just about anywhere in the United States. There main distribution centers are located in California, Texas, Florida, Nevada and Arizona. However, you can purchase them from just about any local outlet or contractor.

If you have been reading the consumer reviews regarding a Goodman heat pump, then you will notice that some people have complained that the pump is loud. These pumps should operate quietly so that they do not disturb anyone. It your pump is noisy then it could require a service call.

Depending on the type of Goodman heat pump you purchase, it may come with a heavy-duty housing cabinet for the outdoor units. This is meant to protect the equipment if it located outdoors. The metal cabinets are thick and thus resistant to corrosion and rust.

All heat pumps and this includes the Goodman heat pump use a refrigerant that helps in the transfer of heat. Now the main reason people buy a heat pump is to save on their energy costs. These units are measured with a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER), which measures how well the unit cools. The Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) measures its efficiency to heat a room. The higher both of these ratings are the more energy efficient your unit is.

Becoming an AC Repair Specialist

Many times, young people feel pressured to attend college. So, they make this their main focus throughout middle and high school. This is okay if a college education is absolutely necessary in order to reach the career goal they are interested in. However, this isn't a good thing for those who want to take an alternative path. The sad news is that many of the youth in this particular situation aren't aware that there are any other alternative paths to success. That's because their parents and other elders don't expose them to other choices. If you can identify with the aforementioned example, you don't have to feel hopeless. There are several ways to become successful if you aren't too keen on attending college. You could become an AC repair specialist, for instance. HVAC Air Conditioning for Your Convenience

Your home is one place you would want to go after a hard day's work. There is no better feeling than to just kick back and relax on your favorite couch after a hectic day at work. This great feeling, however, might not be so great if the temperature in your room is not as per your liking. HVAC air conditioning plays a vital role in providing you with the required comfort level. These heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems not only regulate the temperature in your home, but also purify the air that you breathe.

An HVAC air conditioning system is very useful when it comes to heating your home during winters or cooling your home during summers. You all know that! What you may not know is that they also keep pollutants away from your home as well. The air on the outside is contaminated due to pollution and other impurities. These impurities tend to have a harsh effect on the human body. HVAC systems block all these impurities from entering your home thus managing to provide you with fresh air all the time.

Just when you thought that the pollution outside is bad, well, you might be shocked to know that there are also many indoor pollutants that are present within the four walls of your home. No matter how much you clean your place, there is no getting rid of these pollutants. Well, HVAC air conditioning here filters the air thus reducing the chances of you inhaling these indoor pollutants.

As reliable and effective as these systems may be, they are machines after all. Hence the chances of them giving problems of malfunctioning are enormous. The Cost to Fill Your A/C With Refrigerant Has Skyrocketed

I was surprised to hear from my parts distributor how much the price of refrigerant shot up recently.

The refrigerant that I am talking about is called refrigerant R22. Most of the air conditioners made before 2008 were manufactured using this type of refrigerant. The government has banned the sale of new air conditioners that use this refrigerant because it is an ozone-depleting substance. Since this refrigerant is being phased out the supply has decreased and the price has gone through the roof.

Many systems will leak some refrigerant over time because it is under high pressure and will leak out of any fitting that is not perfectly sealed. There are hundreds of spots on an air conditioning system that may develop a leak over time.

In the past, when an air conditioner needed some refrigerant added, the cost was reasonable to fill it back up, even if it needed some added each year. Now with the extremely expensive refrigerant it could cost some homeowners around $500.00 to refill an air conditioner system. If your air conditioner has a leak, and it is large enough to leak out in a year or less, this gets terribly expensive.

Some leaks can be fixed if they can be located. The most effective method is by using an electronic leak detector. This is an electronic device that can sense molecules of refrigerant that are sucked into a tube on the end of the detector. It sounds simple but it can be very difficult or sometimes even impossible to locate the leak.

The tip of the detector wand has to be directly pinpointed on the leak. Oftentimes the leak is in a place that the wand can not reach such as the underside of evaporator coil which is inside of the sheet metal duct work above the furnace. It can also be in a pipe that may be buried inside of a closed wall behind the drywall.

If the leak can be found then a repair may be possible. A leak on the evaporator coil may require replacing the whole coil. If the leak is on a fitting then it may be repaired by brazing. After the leak is repaired the air conditioner is pressure tested with dry nitrogen. Then the system needs to have a deep vacuum applied to remove the nitrogen and any air that entered. After all of this is done, the air conditioner is then filled with new refrigerant.

As you can imagine this is labor intensive and can get to be very expensive. It may be more cost effective to replace the air conditioner instead of repairing it especially if it is older and has other parts that may fail in the future. Many of the new air conditioners have 10 year warranties so you will not have to worry about future leaks.

All new units made after January 1st 2010 have refrigerant R410 in them. This new refrigerant does not harm the ozone and is not as expensive as the phased out R22 refrigerant. Unfortunately the new refrigerant will not work in air conditioners that were made to use R22 refrigerant.

Greener and Cooler: Getting Full Benefits From Modern Air Conditioner Units

Troubled by the warm seasons? Now is the best time to buy a new AC! Today's air conditioner units are more affordable but they have more features. Old units have few options on the temperature settings, which are usually limited to high or low cool. New models have full digital control on thermostat and air swing. More than that, they can cool your home more quickly but they consume less power.

With countless brands and hundreds of product reviews, it gets difficult to choose the "best" air conditioner unit. However, the numbers as certified by the Department of Energy do not lie. There are uniform stickers on all air conditioner packages that will help you identify the best buy.

The first number to check is the BTU (British Thermal Unit). This is the cooling capacity of the appliance and it begins at 5000. Checking on the BTU is important especially for single-room air conditioners. 5000 BTUs is recommended for rooms with 300 square foot floor area or less. Larger rooms like 700 sq. ft. floor area may require more than 12000 BTU air conditioner units. However, do not be misled because high BTU does not equate with efficiency. If your room's floor area is just 300 sq. ft. then it is unnecessary to have a 10000 to 14000 model. Excess BTU will just cause excessive humidity.

However, be careful not to buy a model with insufficient BTU. The machine will just continue to work hard-using much energy without reaching the desired temperature. You will not be satisfied, and you will end surprised with a huge electric bill.

Secondly, check the Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER). This number should at least be 10. This is standard set by law, to help save the environment and to conserve energy. A high EER means that the air conditioner uses electricity with little power loss. This rating is genuine only if you see the energy star sticker. This is the best time to replace your old air conditioner units. Many companies will grant rebates if you trade-in with them your old air conditioner, given that it has the energy star sticker.

Steps For Installing Flexible Air Conditioning Duct

Flexible air conditionings are used for transferring the air from the duct line to HVAC system. Flex duct is made from aluminum and lines of plastic. The inner layer of this product is surrounded by layer of insulation that is used to protect the barrier of vapor. You need to install each and every layer carefully and you need to follow the procedure of installation properly. If you don't follow it then you won't be able to install them properly. If you want to install it then you need to follow following steps to install your product.

Steps for installing flexible air conditioning duct:

1. Find the distance between the place where you will be placing your flexible duct and the point where you will be connecting it. Use tape to measure the distance. The measures that you get double it and add it to the diameter of your measurement. Then you need to bend your degree up to 90 degree. You need to install your flexible properly.

2. Try to increase the length of your flexible air conditioning duct. You need to make the surface of your flexible smooth. Try to place the stretch tape near the flexible tape. The end of the tape has to be an aligned and try to make the inner of the liner flexible.

3. Try to open the big scissors and try to push the lower blade of the scissor in the flexible duct and try to cut it as per the length of the flexible duct. Ensure that the all the layers of the flexible duct are equal.

4. Try to cut the flexible duct with the help of scissors. Once you have cut the scissors use different types of wires for supporting the inner layer of your flexible air conditioning duct.

5. Try to roll the barriers of the vapor and try to insulate the inner line of the flexible duct from the back of your product. Try to expose 3 inches of the inner line from both the sides of the device.

6. Slide all the liner on both the ends that are found between HVAC system and the register.

7. Place the duct fastening on the each end of the flexible duct. Ensure that the straps are connected with each other and you need to connect with the different point of HVAC system.

8. Tight the plastic strap with the duct fastening. To install it you need to use different tools and the wrap tape to make the plastic duct straps.

9. Once you have installed the flexible then you need to unroll the insulation and you will have to unroll the vapor barrier. Try to cover the inner liner that you have attached with the flexible air conditioning duct. Once you have completed the installation then you can start using the product.

Sealing and Insulating Heating and Cooling Ducts in the House to Increase Efficiency

Air leaks in your attic and basement can really drive up home heating costs if left unattended. This article provides some do-it-yourself tips on how to seal and insulate heating and cooling ducts.

One of the most energy efficient ways to make your home feel more comfortable is by sealing and insulating your duct system.

When it comes to comfort, leaky air affects us most during the winter. While drafty doors and windows contribute to the problem, most significant air leaks in homes come from attics and basements.

If reducing your winter heating bill is a top priority, then leaving basement and attic leaks unaltered is a major mistake. Heat generated by homes during the winter naturally rises to the attic. Leaky attics allow heat to exit the home, providing cold air an opportunity to enter in the process.

Repairing basement and attic leaks are essential to maintaining a comfortable home. In houses with forced-air heating and cooling systems, ducts distribute conditioned air throughout the house. In a typical house, however, some of the air that moves through the duct system is lost because of leaks and poorly sealed connections. This results in higher utility bills and difficulty keeping the house comfortable; no matter how high the thermostat is set.

Since some ducts are concealed in walls and between floors, repairing them can be difficult. However, exposed ducts in attics, basements, crawlspaces and garages can be repaired by sealing the leaks with duct sealant.

In addition, insulating ducts running through spaces that often become hot in summer or cold in winter such as attics, garages and crawlspaces can save significant energy.

If the areas in need of sealing and insulation are accessible, then hiring a contractor to remedy the issue can be avoided by doing it yourself.

The first step toward fully-insulated ducts is sealing all the points in the duct run to protect against air loss and drops in temperature. This is done with a mastic or sealant that is brushed on and left to dry for at least 24 hours. How quickly the air moves through the ducts determines how well it will hold temperature.

Well-sealed joints allow the ducts to carry air at the set temperature. Mastic is used because it will not degrade or shrink away from the joint. Duct tape should not be used for this purpose, since it degrades and decomposes, leaving the joint leaky and unprotected.

Once the ducts have been sealed, an insulating jacket should be wrapped around the duct. Duct insulation is typically made of fiberglass. Insulators may use rigid insulation or faced fiberglass. The fiberglass surface faces in toward the duct while the foil protects the outside of the wrap, preventing heat loss and protecting the fiberglass inside it. The insulation is applied in sheets that are cut to fit and seamed.

Once the ducts are properly sealed, you will enjoy more comfort in your home while spending less on energy costs.

If you are still experiencing leakage issues in the identified problem areas after trying the above suggestions, contact your local heating and cooling professional for further assistance.

Air Conditioning Repair and Maintenance

Air conditioning is just the opposite action of the heat pumps that are used daily in the home. Air conditioner is almost like a refrigerator that is used normally. In a normal refrigeration cycle, the heat pump transfers the lower temperature heat that is generated into higher temperature heat sinks.

The heat that is generated would flow in the opposite direction. The air conditioner pumps out the heat from the interior of the room. A centralized air conditioning uses a duct to distribute the air to one or more rooms with the help of a chilled pipe lines. In a central air conditioning system, the internal noise is relatively lower as it is placed outside the room.

An air conditioner reduces the humidity of the air with the help of the system. The reduced humidity condense the water vapor in order to reduce the temperature i.e. it almost works like a water drop is turned to an ice droplet by a change in the temperature.

An air conditioner is designed in a way reducing 40% to 60% of the humidity in the occupied space. There are some conditioners which only gives dry air. This works like a normal conditioner where only a heat exchanger is used, only intake and exhaust happens.

Repair and its maintenance

Air conditioner and heater works in the similar way with all the duct work, and the blower system. When the system fails, many people would think that there is a need of a repair man to handle it. But in some cases it is not needed.

The most common problem is that they forgot to change the temperature from cool to heat or heat to cool when there is a change in the climate. The most common problem can be fix by the home owners by tracing the problem.

For instance when the air conditioner fails to work, check the circuit breaker or fuse, compressor and pressure level. In some cases there would be an ice formation due to the extreme temperature. In such cases, the only solution is to switch off the air conditioner until the ice melts down.

Air conditioner is usually termed as a comfort maker. When your comfort maker gets disturbed from its routine function, it would be better to call for a serviceman on certain issues. This system works with a condenser and an evaporator. When this remains static, a service man is advised to look after certain condition.

So it's always better to have a periodical check up on your conditioner and a routine cleaning has to be done.

What Should You Expect for Central Air Conditioner Prices?

Window mounted air conditioners will generally do a pretty good job of keeping a room or two in your house nice and cool, but they lack the whole house coverage which only central air conditioning can provide. With central a/c you'll be able to precisely tune the temperature of your home or store, and often you'll be able to provide a different temperature for each room in your home, with the press of a button. It's clear everyone would prefer to use centralized system but they're stymied by central air conditioner prices.

How much?

There are a number of factors you need to keep in mind when estimating central air conditioner prices. These factors include:

  • The age of your property. Older properties are more expensive to install central air conditioning into for the simple fact they weren't constructed with the possibility of central a/c in mind.

  • Your property's level of insulation. The better insulated your property the less powerful of a system you need. The more your property leaks cool air the more you'll need to spend on a central air conditioning system. Insulation levels are often, but not always, correlated with its age.

  • Environmental conditions. Simply put the hotter your climate the more powerful of a central a/c system you'll need.

As you can see there are plenty of conditions in place which can vary central a/c prices substantially.

The Costs On Average

Despite variations in price there are a few estimates you can work with when pricing out your central air conditioning needs.

If you have a property that's about two thousand square feet you can expect to pay around $4,000 for your system. A smaller home will cost as little as half that, while larger systems can cost substantially more.

In addition to the base cost of the system itself you will also need to take into consideration installation costs which can double your cost. If your building already has the requisite ducts than you only need to pay for the system itself. If you need to install ducts expect to pay at least another $2,000 or more to have your central air installed. Most older buildings will NOT have these ducts in place while it's hit or miss whether a new property will have them.

A Wise Investment?

So is central air conditioning worth it, considering it can (worst case scenario) cost you over $10,000? If you have the money to comfortably spend on a full system then its added convenience and level of control makes it a great buy. If you don't have the cash on hand for central air then a couple window mounted conditioners will cost you significantly less and will work better than nothing.

Heating and Air Conditioning Service Technician

A malfunctioning heat and air conditioning system is in dire need of a heating and air conditioning service especially with the extreme weather and its changes. This kind of malfunction calls for heating and cooling systems.

A heating and air conditioning technician is knowledgeable in terms of practicality on how a certain system works, in this case, the heating and cooling systems. Aside from heating and cooling systems, they also specialize in ventilation, support and even refrigeration. The technician aids in the installation, maintenance and repair of the air conditioning system. He or she may work independently or in most cases under a company that attends to environment regulation in industrial, commercial and residential areas.

In order to become a service technician, one must either take the academic path and learn all about mechanics and etc. in the academe, or he or she can take an internship in a service technician company and have the proper training needed. One must also take a standardized test to be a licensed service technician.

The usual tasks of a service technician on a regular day include various activities. The technician often deals with repairing equipment or even replacing it. One must also be familiar with electrical wiring. The technician often needs to handle the wires and other components of the equipment.

The technician also conducts many electrical equipment tests to assess electrical circuits and other components for maintenance. He or she also needs to be familiar with safety procedures especially in installing, maintaining or repairing equipment. He or she also needs to be able to comply with all applicable standards, procedures and policies.

The technician needs to be proficient in reassembling equipment especially after doing the repairs. The service technician also does the inspecting of equipment, making sure it complies to the plan and to locate any kind of malfunction. He or she needs to be able to read blueprints where the equipment plans are located.

Hiring a tech can be quite expensive, so before calling one over to your home you can do a few steps to check your air conditioning system just to be sure there is a malfunction. Check if your condenser (outdoor unit) and furnace (indoor unit) is working properly. Check your fuses and breakers; check if the thermostat is set to cool your air. You should also wash your condenser coil regularly. And if all else fails, hiring a heating and air conditioning service technician is the best possible solution to your problem.

Replacing Air Conditioner What To Replace?

So, your air conditioner has finally quit. A technician found that the condenser (aka outdoor unit), needs to be replaced. The other main part - the evaporator - is still OK, so you're tempted to just replace the condenser. Don't do it.

Let me explain. There are two main parts in an air conditioner, the evaporator and the condenser. You've never seen the evaporator. It quietly sits inside the ductwork and absorbs heat from inside air into the refrigerant. The condenser sits outside of the house and looks like it's doing all the work. Actually, it's only doing half the job. The condenser squeezes heat out of the refrigerant into the outside air.

Parts of existing central air systems aren't good at all at adjusting to each other's needs. If the evaporator absorbs too much heat from the house, the condenser will overheat. If the evaporator doesn't absorb enough heat, it will freeze. The only way make sure an air conditioner will work properly is to match its two main components - the evaporator and the condenser.

It's fairly easy to match components when you install a new air conditioner, as you can see in this article:

http://ezinearticles.com/?Buying-An-Air-Conditioner?-The-ARI-Reference-Number-Is-Your-Best-Friend&id=620937 However, it's much more difficult to match the components of aging systems. Virtually all the systems that may require condenser replacement today were designed to work in 6, 8, or 10 SEER air conditioners. All the air conditioners on the market today are 13 SEER and up. Good luck matching 10 SEER (or even 8 or 6 SEER) evaporator with 13 SEER condenser.

This is why; if you have to replace your old air conditioner, replace everything.

Pros and Cons of an Inverter Air Conditioner

When you choose an inverter air conditioner for home usage, you must choose the best available product. Two best quality inverter AC's are manufactured by Fujistu and Daikin.

You may want to know as to what actually an inverter air conditioning means. An inverter air conditioner consumes much less electricity as compared to usual air conditioning unit because of its mode of operation.

You would be really surprised to find the amount of money you can easily save by making use of this latest technology. When purchasing an inverter air conditioner, you can choose between Daikin and the Fujitsu brands as they are leading manufacturers of this technology.

To assist you in deciding on the proper brand you can read following tips:

• Price. Fujitsu will cost you much less than Daikin. Many people choose Fujitsu as quality of both these brands is same and you have to pay $1500 less for purchasing the Fujitsu.

• Quality. Both Fujitsu and Daikin offer you excellent quality which is worth the money you will invest. They both offer you latest technology among all other brands available. The products manufactured by these companies are high end and last for a long duration. Though few people suggest that Daikin gives better results, but difference is too small and is almost negligible.

• Customer Service. Daikin provides better customer service as compared to the Fujitsu. They immediately respond back to your concerns and enquiries. You may have to wait for much larger time in case of Fujitsu for fixing your air conditioner faults.

Air Conditioner Maintenance

Anyone that has experienced a summer day indoors without air conditioning can appreciate how essential it is to ensure the air conditioning unit for a house or office is always in top working condition. Long summer days are hard on the equipment, and they often need minor maintenance work to avoid bigger problems or a catastrophic failure. Watching for a few signs of trouble and following some easy procedures will help guarantee that cool air is pumped into the building with no interruptions.

Routine Maintenance

The best way to avoid issues is to have the air conditioner checked on a regular basis. Most professionals recommend a yearly check in the spring before the temperatures start warming up. The yearly check will help identify any problems that may be looming on the horizon. The checkup will typically include a check of the coolant level, inspection of the equipment, flushing the drain line, cleaning the condenser unit coils, oiling the fan motor and a few other items.

Keeping the coolant at the proper level will save money on the energy bill. The proper amount of coolant allows the unit to cool the air with using the least amount of energy possible. The shorter amount of running time will reduce energy consumption and lengthen the life of the equipment.

The drain line for the unit discharges the water condensation from the air to the sanitary sewer line of the house. If this line is clogged, the unit will back up into the drip pan. Most systems have a secondary line if the main line becomes clogged. However, if both lines are not functioning, the condensation can spill over the drip pan and drip through the ceiling. This can be a major disaster if it is not caught immediately. Ensuring that the drain lines are clear is an essential step of air conditioning maintenance.

Self Maintenance

While it is important to have the annual inspections by a professional, some routine maintenance needs to be performed more often and can be done by the homeowner. A few simple tasks such as replacing filters, keeping the area around the condenser unit clear, and cleaning the condenser can easily be accomplished by anyone and will help the equipment run at tip-top shape.

It is important for the air filter to be replaced on a regular basis. Most filters will only function properly for a month before they start to become clogged and start allowing dust and dirt into the system. Good filters should be purchased and replaced at the beginning of every month during the portion of the year the unit is being used.

The condenser unit functions by exchanging hot air with the cool air outside. The more effectively the unit can perform this task, the more efficient the system is. If grass is allowed to grow tall next to the unit, or if lawn equipment or furniture is resting on it, the less effective the unit will be. Additionally, the coils around the condenser can become dirty. Spraying the unit with a water hose periodically will keep the coils cleaner and more efficient.

Signs of Possible Issues

No matter how well a system is maintained, eventually failures will occur. A few signs that indicate the need for a repair include a loss of cool air, loud noises from the condenser, water dripping through the backup drain line, and a system that runs for a longer time than normal. If the unit is not cooling properly or is taking a longer time than normal to cool the condenser or coolant level may need to be addressed. A loud noise may indicate an issue with the fan motor. Water dripping is a sign that the primary drain line is clogged. All of these issues would need to be addressed by a professional as soon as possible.

Following these few steps will help the air conditioner unit function as long and as effectively as possible.

Look For Discounts Before Hiring An Air Conditioning Repair Company

Unexpected breakdowns of appliances like air conditioners can be upsetting and in a rush to fix the problem, you simply don't have time to think about how much it's going to cost to have your AC unit repaired. And once you get billed for all the work done to restore its health, you will probably get another shock which you can definitely avoid if you look for discounts before hiring an air conditioning repair company.

Professionals like to put a premium price on their services because, let's face it; they're really good at what they do. But it doesn't mean they won't budge with their rates. After all, it's not summer all the time and they do have off peak times in a year. And this is when they resort to using coupons, vouchers, and other marketing tools to offer their expert skills at a discounted cost.

If you feel or know that your air conditioner is in dire need of servicing, you don't have to wait for it to stop working before you look for a repair company. There's no way to go around the fact that you have to spend some money to get it done but you can find ways to cut down the cost and that is through discounts.

During summer or hot weather days, you can expect the rates of professional air conditioner repair companies to be high since it's the time when they are in big demand. But there are outfits that use new equipment or methods for repair and they are giving out discounts for clients willing to try them.

Some companies also offer group discounts and this is ideal if you have multiple air conditioning units that you need to have serviced or fixed. You can also inquire about same area discounts if you have a neighbor or a friend living in the same location as you are who also need to have an AC unit repaired.

Saving on fuel costs appeals to most air conditioning repairmen and they are more than willing to share the savings with you if you know how to ask for it. But if you want to get the biggest bang for your buck, you should have your AC maintenance work done during the winter when work is scarce for these companies. Not only will you get huge discounts but you'll also have the best air conditioner repair teams vying for your attention.

Benefits of Commercial Air Conditioning Units in the Office

In the current economic climate businesses big and small are looking for ways to not only save money but also help the environment. One way this can be achieved is through installing the best type of commercial air conditioning system that they can. Such a system will ensure that the working environment is perfect for their employees which will help to keep productivity levels at optimum levels, and this in turn could help to ensure that their profit margins remain good.

It isn't that difficult today for a business to find the right commercial air conditioning system that will not only help to create the right working environment but also will help to save on their bills each year. In fact there are several different systems to select from and one of these is the evaporative air cooler system.

So what is it about this kind of system that would make it a suitable option for a business to have installed? Below we look at a number of the benefits to be had from getting this type of commercial air conditioning system installed.

1. This particular air conditioning system needs no new ductwork to be erected if there is some already in position as it can be run through it. Over time the cost savings that a business makes from installing such a commercial air conditioning system can be as much as 75% over the course of a year.

2. Unlike many other commercial air conditioning systems available today this one does not need Freon gas to help cool down the water in them. So of course no Freon means no fumes being released into the atmosphere which could be harmful to the environment.

3. This is a system that is especially suited for use in industries where food production takes place. Not only do such systems improve the quality of the air for the employees who work in such businesses, but also helps to reduce the levels of bacterium in the air as well.

4. These particular systems can with a large number of water pads inside them compared to other air conditioning systems used in commercial premises and the cooled air can be distributed not only evenly but more quickly. Plus they also allow the speed at which the air can be distributed varied.

As you do some more research into these types of commercial air conditioning systems you will soon discover that each one comes with a number of different features and functions. Some will contain more water pads than others and some will have varying speeds at which the cool air can be distributed. Plus the size of the tank where the water is kept to cool the air will differ greatly.

When considering purchasing such a system for a business one needs to look carefully at the materials used to construct the units. Remember these are going to be in contact with water constantly and if not are going to rust or corrode easily if the wrong materials are used. However, there are plenty of companies who produce such commercial air conditioning systems and ensure that they use the right kinds of materials to prevent such problems from occurring.

The Essentials Of Finding The Best Furnace Repair Professional

Furnaces may fail when needed the most. Personal reaction to this matter may highly affect how well the appliance will be repaired. The choice made when selecting a professional to handle it is important but difficult. During the season of winter temperatures tend to go way below that which the body can stand. When such times occur, it will be beneficial to hire the best furnace repair specialist.

The use of appliances for heating usually enables offices and homes to be comfortable even when the weather conditions are harsh. If these devices break down, they may have a negative influence on the health of an individual and therefore quick solutions will be needed. Regular HVAC Maintenance and Repair Keep Your Furnace and Air Conditioner in Top Shape

Although home owners rely on their heating and air conditioning systems to keep their homes comfortable year round, many neglect routine maintenance and upgrades. They simply expect their HVAC system to work when they need it, without ever cleaning, adjusting, or paying much attention to it. And then, when the furnace stops working in the middle of January or the air conditioner dies during a 100° heat wave, these careless home owners are in a bind.

The best way to prevent emergencies with your furnace or air conditioner is simply to have them regularly serviced by a professional HVAC company. Routine cleanings, service, and repairs will help your heating and cooling system live a long life and keep you and your family healthy and comfortable no matter the temperature outside!

Air Conditioners

Annual air conditioner service is recommended by most manufacturers. This routine maintenance will identify bigger problems as well as check coolant levels, condenser efficiency, and other performance related areas to keep your air conditioner in great working order. This maintenance is necessary for all types of air conditioners from heat pumps to traditional cooling units.

One common issue with air conditioning systems is size. Not all homes have the right size central air conditioner unit or the appropriately sized ductwork to carry the cooled air throughout the house. Either issue can cause your air conditioner to work too hard, leading to problems down the road. Make sure that any new air conditioner or ductwork is the correct size prior to installation or have an air conditioner specialist evaluate your current system for proper scale.

If you have an older air conditioning system, you may still be using Freon as a refrigerant. In recent years, this substance has been banned by the EPA as dangerous to the environment and should not be used. For your safety and the planet's, the coolant in your air conditioner needs to be replaced with an environmentally safe product like Puron. Trained professional air conditioning contractors can safely dispose of the old refrigerant and get your air conditioner running with the new "green" air conditioning technology.

Furnaces and Boilers

As with air conditioners, all types of furnaces and boilers should be cleaned at least once a year. In addition to removing accumulated debris, this allows the furnace repair technician to spot other issues and fix them before they become bigger problems! Especially with steam boilers the boiler and burner tray should be cleaned annually for efficient burning and heating.

Also, you probably don't realize it, but regularly servicing your heating system can actually improve your comfort and quality of life. Furnace problems can lead to humidity imbalances: excessive humidity or dryness can cause health problems including mold growth, asthma attacks, itchy eyes, and nose bleeds as well as adversely affecting woodwork and windows. An expert heating professional can diagnose issues with your furnace and adjust it to optimize humidity and make your home as comfortable as possible.

Your furnace or boiler could likely benefit from an upgrade or repair, especially if it is an older unit. Steam boilers are particularly prevalent in older homes and require frequent maintenance, but this existing heating infrastructure can be enhanced with small adjustments or improvements. Among the repairs recommended to improve your steam boiler's efficiency and lengthen its life span are:

· replacing leaky radiator valves
· installing a spark ignition in place of a pilot light
· replacing rusted or damaged pipes
· installing a skim tap system to remove sludge build up
· adjusting gas valve pressure

Even forced hot water heat, which is virtually maintenance-free, can benefit from small upgrades. A home heating professional might recommend adding an air eliminator to reduce water noise or upgrading to a new expansion tank that takes up less space.

HVAC System Cleaning

In addition to regular maintenance and occasional system upgrades, it is important to have your HVAC system cleaned annually. The ductwork connected to your air conditioner or forced hot air heating can collect dust, mold, pollen, bacteria, and other allergens; these built-up contaminants are circulated throughout your home every time the furnace kicks in or the air conditioner turns on. By regularly having your heating and cooling system cleaned, you prevent these potentially dangerous substances from being spread throughout your home.

These HVAC system repairs and maintenance may seem like common sense, but you would be surprised by how many home owners routinely neglect their heating and cooling system. By taking the time to call an air conditioning and furnace company [http://absolute-home-comfort.boston-biz.com/site/services] once a year, you can optimize your HVAC system for efficiency and probably prevent emergency situations from developing. Take care of your heating and cooling system, and they'll keep you comfortable the whole year round!

How to Choose a Portable Air Cooler

When looking to keep the home cool in summer many people look towards the portable air cooler to achieve this, there are many benefits from using an air cooler compared to an air conditioner.

One benefit is the electricity these units actually use when operating, this can be much lower usage compared to the portable air conditioner. This means cheaper electric bills which everyone is looking for these days, with the cost of fueling our homes increasing everyone is searching for the most economical way to heat and cool their properties.

Another thing to realize about the portable air cooler is that it will only cool a certain area of the room, they are not designed to cool the whole area like air conditioners are. This is an advantage for the cooler as you can situate it close to a person to get maximum cooling, there is no point cooling the whole room down when it is you that needs keeping cool.

A lot of people these days are concerned with the harm to the environment these sorts of machines actually cause, well the air cooler causes no harm as it does not use freon gas or any other sort of chemicals in the cooling process. It actually uses cold wet pads inside the machine which hot air is drawn over and then blown out as cold air, this is a simple process but very effective when used in dry low humidity areas.

Another aspect of the portable air coolers is that they use evaporation to cool the air, this system uses far less electricity than other air conditioning units. The coolers are also known to remove pet dander, dust, and musty smells from the room they are working in, thus making your home a much more friendly environment to live in for all the family.

A major concern with most people is the actual cost of these units, they think they cost a vast amount of money to buy, this is not the case with the portable air cooler as they are very reasonably priced and the money you will save on your electricity bills after a few months of use will almost cover the cost of the unit.

So if you are looking for an efficient way to keep yourself cool during those hot summer months, then go online and do some research into the many different types of portable air cooler available today.

Keys to Choosing Which Gas Furnace is Best

Goodman furnaces have been considered one of the best gas furnaces for a very long time. They have been offering great quality along with affordable prices since 1954. Goodman offers multi-position variable speed models, down flowing multi speed models, and they also offer a multi-position dual saver models. Goodman also offers a high efficiency gas furnace as well as your standard efficiency furnace. They have all kinds of different varieties of furnaces to choose from.

What are the Difference Between High Efficiency and Standard Efficiency?

To fully understand your furnace purchase, you'll need to know about efficiency ratings and what they mean. The difference between your high efficiency and your standard furnace is the AFUE rating that is given to each furnace. AFUE is short for annual fuel utilization efficiency. Today, the EPA requires a furnace to have at least a 78% AFUE rating. A Goodman high efficiency furnace has an AFUE rating of 95%. The standard Goodman furnace has around an 80% rating. Goodman also offers a limited 10 year parts warranty and a 10 year limited unit replacement warranty for their furnaces. Prices on these furnaces usually range around $800-$3000. You may need to evaluate your home before deciding which gas furnace is best for you. A Ruud gas furnace has many of the same features and is one of the most recognized (and reputable) names in the HVAC industry.

The Importance of Proper Installation

Having a gas furnace installed into your home can be a little pricey, but the quality of using a gas furnace is amazing; not to mention the money you will save from using a natural gas furnace as your heat source. Be sure to shop around when looking for someone to install your furnace. You want to make sure you get someone that is qualified for the job. Asking for a resume of the installer is a great to see what that persons work is like. You don't want to get someone who doesn't care or doesn't know what they are doing when installing your furnace. Miss-installation can result in severe problems with your furnace and even catastrophic problems with your home, including house fire. So it is extremely important you take special care when choosing someone to install your furnace. Also a lot of common furnace problems such as, the furnace not running right, or the furnace does not run according to the thermostat setting, can be avoided with proper installation. It is not recommended for anyone to try and install a home heating furnace unless you're a licensed professional. Also installing your own furnace makes you reliable if anything is to go wrong.

Which Gas Furnace is Best for Your Home?

When choosing which brand of furnace, make sure and shop around. You need to look at what fuel source is the most economical and available in your area, how much money you have to spend and how large a unit you will need to meet the space requirements of your home. Once you have decided on a brand and model, make sure you have a licensed professional come in to do the installation of your furnace. If you do consider do it yourself installation, check to see if your warranty will still be effective. Some manufacturers will not honor the warranty unless a licensed person does the installation. A professional may also increase the odds that you purchase the best gas furnace for your home.

Heating and Air Conditioning

Living in West Texas sometimes isn't that fun - there's almost always wind blowing. And since the majority of land out here is barren and used for cotton fields, that means there's always some dirt blowing around. Sometimes it's not just some dirt - it's enough to cover the skies and make everything miserable. You end up with dirt in places you didn't know you had!

Then other times it's so hot you can't breathe without keeping your air conditioner at a steady 65 degrees. Of course, during the winter it's exactly the opposite. It can get so cold that you can't keep comfortable without the thermostat staying at 73 degrees. I couldn't imagine living in Arizona during June with my air conditioner out on the fritz!

With all the changes in temperature and weather conditions, it's no wonder heating and air conditioning specialists are always needed - no matter where you live. A heating and air conditioning unit can last anywhere from 15-20 years with the proper maintenance and is considered a wise investment by many.

Some tips to keep your homes comfy and units working to their potential:

*Change the filters every 30-60 days. Depending on the weather conditions where you live and the allergies of some family members, you will probably change this filter more frequently. The cleaner the air, the better those with allergies will breathe. We can usually tell when to change our filter as my brother has severe allergies that act up if we go longer than a month without changing our air filter.

*Rinse off the outside unit. You don't want dirt and debris building up in the outside unit, so it's best to clean this every few months.

*Use ceiling fans when you can. Ceiling fans will spread the cold or warm air more efficiently, keeping your unit from working too hard.

*Use blinds and curtains where you can. We found out that our home will warm more quickly in the evening since the setting sun shines directly into our front windows - great for the winter, but horrible for the summer. So we bought energy efficient curtains - designed to keep the warm air in and cold air out in the winter and vice versa in the summer.

Remember, these tips will not only help the longevity of your unit, but they can also help keep those monthly bills down.

High Efficiency Air Conditioners - A Case For Heat Pumps And Mini Split Systems

In the recent years, with the advent of Mc Mansions in the USA, bigger homes for the most part came with central air conditioning units and furnaces built in. In the rush to get as many houses built as possible in the shortest amount of time, little thought was given to the alternative options, such as heat pumps or mini split systems. We will talk about both of these energy efficient air conditioners here. By reading this, you should be able to decide whether replacing or supplementing your current AC units with high efficiency air conditioners will make sense for your finances in the times of increasing energy costs.

Heat pumps

Heat pumps are basically reversible air conditioners. The air conditioner will cool your home in the summer, it will be turned off in the winter and you will need to use a furnace to heat your home. The heat pump, on the other hand, runs just like an air conditioner in the summer, and will reverse its action in the winter, heating the house instead of cooling it.

Because the heat pump works on the principle of using energy to transfer energy from the outside of home into the home, it is much more energy efficient than the regular furnace. Depending on the outside temperature, and the type of the heat pump (geothermal or air to air), you will save as much as 50%-70% of the energy costs for heating in the winter.

Another advantage of running a heat pump throughout the year is - consistency. By not allowing the heat pump to rest and gather dust throughout the winter, you will minimize any effects of external debris or dust - you will simply be ready to perform monthly maintenance on your heat pump, any time of the year. Any problems will therefore never go undetected for long.

Mini split systems

Mini split systems are made of two units, the outside unit which houses the compressor, and the inside unit, which houses the air exchanger and the evaporator. Mini split systems, as the name implies, are used to cool (or heat in the case of mini split heat pumps) individual rooms. A single external compressor can typically be connected to up to four internal air exchangers in four different places or rooms.

The advantage of mini split systems is their energy efficiency compared with the AC wall units or AC window units, as well as with central AC systems. Since the (cold) air handler, or evaporator and the (hot) compressor are physically separated and only connected with the refrigerant pipe, the energy losses due to heat transfer are smaller in mini split systems as compared with the wall, window, or central AC systems. This is the reason for mini split system providing such energy efficient air conditioning and earning the energy star air conditioners stickers. When split mini air conditioners are compared with ducted central air conditioning systems or even with portable room air conditioners there are also much duct less heat losses, as it is easy to minimize the heat losses in the thin refrigerant pipes of a mini split system.

Thinking Ahead: Troubleshooting a Gas Furnace Before the Winter Months

As the colder months of fall and winter begin to creep up, it is important to check your heating systems inside your house for problems and leaks to help the efficiency of the system as well as save you some money. While many of these problems may seem simple to fix, troubleshooting a gas furnace should be left up to a professional.

Common Problems with Gas Furnaces

When troubleshooting a gas furnace it is important to note that the professional turns off all electrical power to your system before working on the system. Failure to do so could result in an injury or damage to your system.

When troubleshooting a gas furnace a common problem is that the colder months have hit, the heat has been turned on, and yet there is no heat coming out of the vents. The possible causes of this can range from the simple (thermostat set too low and not calling for heat) to a more complex issue that would need a professional there to fix (hot surface ignition or intermittent pilot electronic ignition problems).

Another common problem that could occur is that your gas furnace is not producing enough heat. This can be caused by a dirty air filter, dirty or misaligned gas burners. While a dirty air filter problem can be fixed by the homeowner, it is highly recommended that a furnace service technician is called in to have the burners adjusted and cleaned.

Advanced Problems with Gas Furnaces

The one major problem that everyone fears once the colder months have hit is that their furnace stops running. Some of the possible causes could simply be no-brainers once they are checked. There could be that there is no power running to the system, the power switch is off, the pilot light is out, no gas or a motor overload. As you begin to check and make sure that all of these simple problems are checked and still no luck with the system running, it may be time to call a professional.

Blown Fuses or Tripped Circuit Breakers

When a service professional is called to look at the furnace they may discover that it has blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers causing the furnace not to run. This can be fixed by the professional by simply checking all of the circuit breakers around or near the furnace and restoring the circuits.

Motor Overload or Pilot Light Out

These problems can be simple to fix, but can also be a forewarning leading to more major problems in the future that require a professional and new parts for your furnace. A motor overload can be fixed by simply waiting 30 minutes after the overload occurred and pressing the reset button, and repeating if necessary. If the pilot light is out, simply relighting the pilot will fix this problem.

An important thing to remember when troubleshooting a gas furnace is to never hesitate to call a service professional if the problem cannot be diagnosed by a simple look over of the furnace and its pilot light and air filter.
