Air Conditioning Efficiency and How to Maintain It

Air Conditioning systems have a SEER rating which is the seasonal energy efficiency ratio. In a nutshell it describes how efficient the unit is at cooling your home while saving electricity. Energy Star qualified central air conditioners are about 14% more efficient than standard models.

However, as with any piece of mechanical equipment, its efficient operation and performance largely depends on how the A/C system is maintained. According to the Koppen climate classification system, Fort Worth and Arlington Texas have a humid subtropical climate. Because of this climate, air conditioning efficiency matters for Fort Worth and Arlington residents and it is very important to maintain your air cooling system in order to feel an optimal comfort level in your home.

What's great about being identified with the Energy Star label is that it is not a marketing ploy but rather a government backed program which was established to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants caused by the inefficient use of energy. The blue Energy Star logo makes it easy to identify products which qualify under this standard. Energy efficient products save you money on energy bills without sacrificing performance, features, or comfort. And because Energy Star products save you money on utilities, you will recover your investment within a reasonable period of time.

A quick do-it-yourself monthly routine to maintain your air conditioning system is to inspect, clean, or change your air filters on a regular basis. Doing so will prevent dust and dirt from building up in the system. Dirty filters will slow down the air flow which requires the air conditioner to work harder to maintain the desired indoor temperature.

A home owner's nightmare is expensive maintenance and/or early system failure caused by lack of continued maintenance. In order to prevent such a situation an annual professional tune up should be performed by a qualified air conditioning contractor.

A professional annual tune-up will consist of checking all system controls inside and outside of your home, lubricating all moving parts, cleaning evaporator and condenser air conditioning coils, checking your refrigerant level, cleaning and adjusting blower components, tightening all electrical connections, and checking the condensate drain.

Maintaining your cooling system will ensure that your air conditioning equipment will operate at its peak performance to provide you with years of enjoyment.
