About Hair Straighteners

Having straight hair has never been so popular due to the advent of the hair straightener. They are unique as they smooth the cuticle of the hair which gives the illusion of straight silky hair. Each year they are becoming more popular with women.

It is important that straighteners are used correctly as improper use may cause breakage and possibly hair loss. If you have never used one previously it would be best to seek advice from a hairdresser.

The best practice would be to use hair straighteners no more than twice a week or reserve it for just special occasions as you do not want to be applying excessive heat which can weaken it. It may even eventually snap off due to the overuse of straighteners and particularly if you have chemicals in the hair such as bleach which has already weakened the hair structure. To help put moisture back you could apply conditioning treatments at least once a week.

If you must straighten your hair every day the best thing would be to wash your hair in the evening and air dry it overnight. Before you use the hair straightener ensure your hair is completely dry or you could be at risk of breakage. A heat protectant is good to use prior to straightening to protect the hair from damage. Once you have finished you could apply serum to prevent any frizz from forming.

The last thing that you want is to burn your scalp with the straightener so it is best to section the hair off and start at least 1cm from the scalp. If you have difficulty using a straightener, get a friend to help you or visit your local salon. You do not want to be applying to musch pressure while using a hair straightener as it may pull the hair. Hair thinning causes the hair to appear dull.

If you have extremely frizzy hair which is difficult to manage you may possibly want to blow wave it straight prior to applying the straightener as you will get a smoother finish. Normally you should only go over the hair twice as anymore could drastically dry out the hair and cause unwanted frizz.

When selecting a straightener it would be advisable to choose one with a temperature control setting as you do want to be using one at constantly 200 degrees C.

If you wear a wig or hair piece such as a weft you want to ensure that it is possible to apply heat directly.
