Air Conditioning - Spring Start Up Essential Checklist

Do you have a reverse cycle air conditioner and haven't used it all winter and want to fire it up in spring? Below is a checklist you should complete before starting up.

1. Ideally, you should run your air conditioning system once a month (even for a few minutes) over winter so the seals stay strong. Just like a car, regular running will keep your air conditioner in top shape.

2. Clean the return air grille filter. Wash with warm soapy water or vacuum, just don't dry it out in the sun or it may warp.

3. Inspect the outdoor compressor unit. Look for any signs of damage and have it serviced if it looks in any way broken. Clean the area around the compressor to ensure good airflow. Wash down the unit with a soapy cloth and water to keep it clean.

4. Now, fire up the unit. Do it before the first hot day to ensure it is still functioning. If it is a mild day you may need to set the temperature quite low on cooling to ensure the compressor kicks in.

5. Go outside and examine the compressor. Listen for any unusual noises such as grinding or tapping sounds. If you hear anything out of the ordinary, get the unit serviced.

6. Go inside and wait to see if the unit starts to cool the rooms. If the unit fails to start cooling, something may be damaged and you will need a service.

7. If all is up and running, you are complete. Now you will be ready for that first hot day of spring.

Be sure to perform this checklist before the first hot day arrives. By doing this you will be prepared for that first hot day of spring and the summer months to come. If you leave it too late and there is a problem, you may have to wait for service as there is always an influx of warranty and service calls after the first hot day of spring.
